When it comes to smoking in Texas, there’s good news and bad news.  The good news is the percentage of Texas adults who smoke has dropped. The bad news is those adults who currently smoke represent approximately 3 million adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 90% of those who smoke started prior to the age of 18.  So, preventing tobacco use in our youth is the key to ending the tobacco epidemic.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in Texas.  Smoking cigarettes causes more deaths than alcohol, car accidents, HIV, guns and illegal drugs combined.  Smoking cigarettes is most closely associated with lung cancer, but also plays a significant role in cancers of the throat, esophagus, and bladder among others.  It is also a leading cause of accelerated coronary artery disease, which leads to heart attacks.

Look at the benefits if you kick the smoking habit. According to the National Cancer Institute, within 20 minutes of quitting smoking your blood pressure and heart rate start to normalize.  Within several hours your blood carbon monoxide levels begin to decrease and oxygen levels start to increase. In 2-3 days your sense of taste and smell will improve.  Within several months you can expect significant improvement in lung function.  Within five years the lung cancer death rate decreases by almost half and within 10 years, lung cancer death rate is similar to that of a person who does not smoke.

Here are proven methods that increase your chance for success. The Comprehensive Cancer Control Tobacco Work Group at MD Anderson Cancer Center has developed a Smoking Cessation Resource Guide for Galveston County (available at www.texascancer.info). These 5 steps can increase your chance for success.

  1. Get Ready – Set a quit date, remove tobacco products from your surroundings, and anticipate triggers.
  2. Get Support – Talk to family, health care providers, counselors and coaches.
  3. Learn New Skills – Reduce stress by reading, exercising, or enjoying a new sport.
  4. Get Medications – Chantix, Zyban, and several Nicotine preparations can double your chance of quitting for good when used correctly.
  5. Be prepared for relapse and difficult situations – Most people try several times before successfully quitting.

Kicking the habit isn’t easy but can help to alleviate and prevent health problems for smokers and the people around them.

True or False? Vegetable Myths Debunked http://bestneighborsever.com/true-false-vegetable-myths-debunked/ Thu, 01 Jun 2017 17:46:40 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=4603 The post True or False? Vegetable Myths Debunked appeared first on .

We’ve all been told to “eat your vegetables” at one point or another in our lives. We know the basics – the more colorful your plate, the better. But is eating vegetables really as necessary as everyone says? Or were our mothers exaggerating about the power of veggies? Celebrate National Vegetable Day with us and find out the truth once and for all.

vegetables

True or False- You should have two to three servings of vegetables each day

False! The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that you have between five to nine servings of vegetables a day. This is because veggies are full of fiber and add a large amount of nutrients to your diet with a low amount of calories.

True or False- Vegetables can stifle your appetite

True! Vegetables are full of fiber. That means when you eat them, you get fuller faster. You can also eat large portions of veggies because your body breaks down the calories quickly while you are eating them.

True or False- Raw vegetables are better for you

False! Vegetable nutrition can go up or down, depending on the way that it is prepared. Some produce is most nutritious when cooked, like corn, while others are most nutritious when raw, like onions.

True or False- Vegetables are fat-free and cholesterol-free

True! Vegetables for all intents and purposes are both fat-free and cholesterol-free. About 95% of vegetables contain less than a gram of fat per serving.

True or False- All vegetables are created equal

False! Canned vegetables have more sodium than fresh veggies. Sometimes canned vegetables can have up to half the recommended daily amount of sodium, which is between 1,500 and 2,300 milligrams. People with hypertension and heart disease should be aware of this.

True or False- Vegetables can cause excessive gas and bloating

True! Because of the excessive amount of fiber, vegetables can have a gaseous effect on our bodies. The veggies that pack a massive punch are broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and asparagus. To avoid this gassy side effect, add fiber into your diet, little by little.

Enjoy your veggies and spread the word about why they are so darn good for you! Neighbors is here for you 24/7/365. Visit Neighbors Emergency Center to find an Emergency Room near you!

This week is National Poison Prevention Week. Created by the American Association of Poison Control Centers, this week raises awareness and promotes numerous types of poison prevention. Learn prevention tips that can help save a loved one’s life.

Food Poisoning

Food poisoning, or foodborne illness, is caused by ingesting food that is contaminated. The most common causes of food poisoning are bacteria, viruses, parasites, and toxins. Contamination occurs when food is not handled correctly while it is being cooked.

The most common symptoms of food poisoning include upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and dehydration. Symptoms can range from being mild to extremely severe. Food poisoning affects 1 in 6 Americans each year. This means about 48 million people get sick, and over 128,000 are hospitalized. Sadly, this results in about 3,000 deaths annually. Learn how to properly prepare, cook, and store foods in your home.

The key to avoiding poisoning in the home is to practice safe storage habits. Certain items must be stored away, out of reach, and out of sight of children. These items include all medications, tobacco, alcohol, cleaning and laundry supplies, pesticides and insect repellent, batteries, oils and lubricants, personal care products, and chemicals.

If for any reason you or your child ingest anything concerning read the label of the substance and call your local poison center (1-800-222-1222) or 9-1-1.

Over-the-counter medicine safety

Over 10,000 kids under the age of 18 visit emergency departments everyday due to the improper use of over-the-counter medicines. It is crucial that the parents and guardians of teenagers discuss the safe use and storage of OTC medicines.

Such tips include reading and following label instructions, never sharing or taking medicine from anyone else, remembering medicine dosages, and asking permission and guidance when taking medication. Learn even more tips about talking to your teenager, and how to properly read medicine labels.

Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time http://bestneighborsever.com/adjusting-daylight-saving-time/ Tue, 07 Mar 2017 15:16:16 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=4307 The post Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time appeared first on .

]]>

During daylight saving time in the spring, people in most parts of the United States move their clocks forward an hour. This means one more extra hour of daylight in the morning. Many families embrace daylight saving time as it means extra time for the kids to play. However, when we “spring forward” it can affect not only our sleep, but the sleep of our children. Learn how to successfully plan for daylight saving time, before the clock resets.

Practice a new bedtime

Gradually introduce a new bedtime to your child. That way when daylight saving time begins, your child is somewhat acclimated. A week or so before daylight saving time starts, put your child to bed 5-15 minutes earlier. Then, 1 to 2 days before daylight saving, put your child to bed 20-30 minutes earlier. When it’s finally time to move the clock forward an hour, your child will be ready to go to bed at an earlier time.

Keep naps regular

Try to keep nap times as regular as possible. Parents can make the mistake of letting their child sleep in the day after daylight saving time begins. Instead, wake your child up at the same time. You may think denying them of this rest will cause them to be sleep deprived; however, if you do let them sleep, they may not be able get to bed on time in the evening. This will lead to an overall more difficult adjustment to the new sleep schedule.

Wake up earlier

Waking your child up earlier may be the best tactic if you have not practiced a new bedtime. When daylight saving begins, wake your child up an hour earlier. This will cause them to be sleepier in the evening, allowing them to be put to bed much earlier. This will start a healthy sleep cycle of falling asleep and waking up at the appropriate time.

Remember, as an adult you will adjust to daylight saving time much easier than your child. However, these tips will work for your sleep schedule just as well! 3 Ways to Make your New Year’s Resolution Stick http://bestneighborsever.com/3-ways-make-new-years-resolution-stick/ Tue, 28 Feb 2017 18:07:28 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=4272 The post 3 Ways to Make your New Year’s Resolution Stick appeared first on .

]]>

Okay, so you made your new year’s resolution about a month ago. You decided that there was something in your life you really wanted to commit to changing. You wrote it down, meditated on it, and started on your new journey of 2017.

Here are the top 5 New Year’s Resolutions that people generally make:

1- Stay fit and healthy

2-Lose weight

3-Enjoy life to the fullest

4- Spend less, save more

5- Spend more time with family and friends

Any of these on your list? Most people tend to let their resolutions slide away, but we know you won’t! Whether you’re mastering your list, or you need a little help, Neighbors has some tips on how to get your resolutions to stick.

Make one change at a time

As humans we only have a limited amount of willpower. Sometimes multiple resolutions won’t work. It may be best to narrow your list in order to accomplish more.

After all, just one resolution can cause for multiple tiny changes within it. For example the resolution of eating better means more grocery shopping, more cooking, and less going to social events. That’s a lot of changes! Take your list one step at a time.

Make a realistic plan

Okay, so you want to spend more time with your family this year. Perhaps originally your plan was to pop over to your parents house every single Sunday.

That may not be so realistic. Start by committing to something simple, and then when you’ve mastered that, take another step forward. For example, commit to visiting your parents one Sunday a month. Then once you’ve successfully accomplished that for 3-4 months, feel free to commit to two Sundays a month. A good plan will yield good results.

Don’t get down on yourself

So, some of your resolutions are not going as planned. Perhaps you had a cheat week with food that makes you feel doomed, or you’ve already blown through the budget you made in January.

Our temptation can be to completely throw it out the window.   Don’t do that! Simply refocus, make a new plan and start again! You can readjust your resolutions to help yourself be more successful!

5 Simple Ways to Take Care of Your Body http://bestneighborsever.com/5-simple-ways-take-care-body/ Fri, 10 Feb 2017 16:57:52 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=4217 The post 5 Simple Ways to Take Care of Your Body appeared first on .

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! We know you’re going to give your friends and family tons of love, but why not channel that into yourself as well? Show your body how much you love it, by taking care of it. Check out these 5 simple ways you can take care of yourself on a daily basis.

5-simple-ways-03
5-simple-ways-01

Drink clean filtered water- and lots of it!

The best way to drink your water is at room temperature or warm. That way your body doesn’t use excess energy warming it up. As a result the water you drink will be more hydrating and beneficial to your body. Staying well hydrated is key to your health. After all, our bodies are made up of 75% water!

Meditate

Spending time meditating each day can do wonders for your mind, and your body! You can meditate for as little as one minute, all the way up to an hour! Focus on your breathing, and emptying your mind. Remember, thoughts may come and go as you meditate, and that’s fine! Just acknowledge them, and let them slip away!

5-simple-ways-02

Skip the Sugar

Sugary drinks can become something we reach for without even thinking. From soda, to artificial juices, they are all around us. However, these drinks are filled with an excess amount of sugar that can end up dragging you down, and negatively affecting your body. A solution is to drink healing herbal tea instead. Teas are filled with tons of antioxidants, and can be very satisfying. They come in multiple flavors and are refreshing both hot, and cold.

Enjoy Exercise

Sometimes when we think of exercise, we take it to the extreme. We imagine running full force on a treadmill, or doing an insane amount of sit-ups and push-ups. Remember, low-key exercise is just as beneficial to your body! Enjoy a walk in nature, do yoga, or simply stretch for a bit before bed. All of these will cause endorphins to surface, making you happier, and boost your immune system!

3 Ways to Relax after the Holidays http://bestneighborsever.com/3-ways-relax-holidays/ Fri, 30 Dec 2016 21:15:36 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=3973 The post 3 Ways to Relax after the Holidays appeared first on .

The holidays are a wonderful time filled with family, food, and of course, festive fun. However, once things start winding down, we can tend to start winding back up. From sorting through the aftermath of our holiday budget, to getting ready to head back to school and work, our to-do list can begin growing. This year, ease into the New Year feeling without stress. Check out these tips on how to stay relaxed post-holidays.

Unwind after traveling

It is important that you give yourself plenty of time to unwind if you have been traveling during the holiday season. Try and give yourself a day, or night of recovery before heading back to work. This will allow you to unpack and destress. You will find that simply having time to come home and read a book, or watch a t.v. show before getting a good night’s sleep and beginning another work week very helpful.

Don’t skip your workout

Feeling sluggish from all the holiday celebrating? Skipping your morning run, or afternoon yoga class to get some extra rest may seem like the solution. However, your favorite self care activities will give you energy and recharge you. After being active your stress levels will drop. In addition, you can begin to combat those extra holiday calories enjoyed.

nec_december2016blogs_w2_fitness-1

Don’t overextend your schedule

Right after the holidays and before the New Year may seem like a perfect time to catch up with friends, or finish those work projects that you left on hold. But, putting too much on your plate can lead to post-holiday stress. Give yourself a couple weeks of breathing room when making plans with friends and family. In addition, reevaluate and don’t be afraid to extend any work deadlines. Prioritize what is important and base your schedule around these things.

On a daily basis, many people try and make smarter choices that are more beneficial to our overall state of health. An example of this is the choice to drink diet soda, and avoid the extra 140 calories or so that comes along with the common sugary soft drink. However, there is more to consider when choosing drinks with the substitution of artificial sweeteners. The overall effects of incorporating diet drinks into your daily consumption can do more harm than good.

The artificial sweeteners found in diet drinks have the same effects on our bodies as sugar. It triggers insulin, which causes your body to store excessive fat, leading to weight gain. Artificial sweeteners also have a more intense flavor than real sugar. As a result, our senses can get dull, and naturally sweet foods, like fruit, seem less fulfilling.

health fitness

Although diet soda is calorie free, that does not mean that it will help aid you if your ultimate goal is weight loss. In fact, research has shown that diet soda drinkers are more likely to increase in weight circumference in comparison with people who do not drink diet sodas.

health fitness

This is due to multiple reasons, including the psychological assumption that because you are consuming a diet drink with no calories you are more justified in indulging in unhealthy foods.

Finally it’s also important to note that just because you are drinking a diet soda with zero calories, does not mean you are adding any nutritional value to your body. You are avoiding a calorie count based on sugar, but you are not filling your body up with the nutrients it needs. The best zero-calorie drink to consume is water.

health fitness

It is essential for our bodies, and adds positive value to your overall health. If you are craving for some added flavor, mix some fruit into your water. Or, if you want that soda fizziness you love, try sparkling water.

Many people are concerned with their physical health and work hard to keep their bodies in peak condition. But, what about exercising our minds? Although we may rarely think about it, our minds control everything we do from driving our cars, to giving our children hugs. Because our minds regulate everything, it is important to keep them healthy. Here are 5 ways you can keep your mind sharp and active.

Move Around More – Get active, and your brain will see the benefits. In your brain there is a specific area that handles memories called the striatum. When comparing athletes to non-athletes, a study found that athletes had a larger striatum. Those who exercise regularly can up the size of their hippocampus brain memory by 2 percent.

Health and Fitness

Know what is Normal Memory Loss—As you get older, memory loss is inevitable. However, you should identify what is normal memory loss, and what may be excessive. They best way to do this is to compare yourself to other people your age. If you can’t seem to remember where you parked the car, but your friends easily can, there may be a problem.

Health and Fitness

Drink Up– Caffeine can improve your memory and protect your focus. Having a cup of caffeine 30 minutes before you need a boost of brain power is well worth the effects. However, limit your caffeine intake. Too much caffeine can actually hurt your cognitive performance.

Turn on Some Music– While you’re at work throughout the day listen to music. Studies have shown that it actually enhances your cognitive performance. It strengthens your ability to stay alert, and stay focused. When selecting your music choice, but sure to keep it light. Simple songs will keep you focused on the task at hand, but complex songs could cause your brain to get distracted.

Health and Fitness

Chew Gum– Chew a stick of gum 20 minutes before the big presentation. When looking at students, studies found that chewing gum before a test resulted in better test scores. Chewing gum causes a neural arousal that boosts your brainpower. Such a simple act can come in handy daily.

Believe it or not, the average American child has six to 10 colds every year. This results in colds being the leading cause for doctor’s visits and missed school days for children. So, what can parents do to prevent their children from getting sick in a school full of germs daily? The best way to stop germs before they spread is to have a good defense.

Teach your child how to properly wash their hands. This specifically means knowing they must constantly wash their hands throughout the day, and do so with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Studies have shown that only half of middle school and high school students wash their hands after using the bathroom. Even more concerning,

health-fitness

only 33 percent of girls and 8 percent of boys used soap. Children generally get colds because they constantly touch their eyes and nose with germy hands. These cold virus germs quickly spread, but can easily be prevented. If your child has a field trip, or outdoor event, be sure to provide them with hand sanitizing gel or wipes as an alternative.

Also, teach your child to be aware of germ etiquette. If they see another child, or have a friend with symptoms of sickness, they should know to move away, and not mingle. In addition, if your own child is ill, or has symptoms such as sneezing or coughing, they should know to cover their mouths and use and discard of tissue paper immediately

health-fitness

to prevent their germs from spreading. The spreading of germs can also be prevented by prepping your child with what should and should not be shared at school. Items such as lip balm, lotions, earbuds, and locker towels should be viewed as personal times.

Finally build your child’s immunity for germs, starting in your home. Make sure that they get plenty of sleep and exercise, and have well-balanced diets. Healthy lunches and snacks are an excellent way to keep your child’s immune system strong. Also be aware of their stress levels both academically and socially.

health-fitness

All these things attribute to having a healthy child from the inside out.
