Food Poisoning

Food poisoning, or foodborne illness, is caused by ingesting food that is contaminated. The most common causes of food poisoning are bacteria, viruses, parasites, and toxins. Contamination occurs when food is not handled correctly while it is being cooked.

The most common symptoms of food poisoning include upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and dehydration. Symptoms can range from being mild to extremely severe. Food poisoning affects 1 in 6 Americans each year. This means about 48 million people get sick, and over 128,000 are hospitalized. Sadly, this results in about 3,000 deaths annually.
