Sabine Causeway 5K

On Friday, August 21st, Neighbors Emergency Center will participate in the Sabine Causeway 5K. It will take place at Sabine Causeway, Port Arthur, TX. Parking will be available at Walter Umphrey State Park.

The Beat Blog

The race begins at 7 p.m. with the course beginning on the Texas side of the bridge, crossing into Louisiana, and returning back to Texas.

This event is being hosted by Sport Society for American Health. The organization’s mission is to provide health and fitness education and opportunities to directly impact the community. Look for the Neighbors sign at the starting gate. We hope to see you there!

Neighbors Gets You Back to School

This week Neighbors Emergency Center’s Medical Director Dr. Chilton was featured on We are Austin to give important tips about heading back to school. Watch the segment here, or read below for a quick recap of the essential back to school checklist for parents and kids.

  • Be sure all your children’s shots are up to date before sending them back to school—any over the summer illnesses should be cleared so no one else gets sick
  • Be sure to obtain complete physicals as some athletics activities may require them
  • Hearing and vision should be properly checked
  • As the school year begins be sure to establish a routine for sleeping and eating
  • Breakfast is very important, especially for younger children; this will help with academic success
  • Elementary aged children need about 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep; children going through puberty also need a sufficient amount of sleep—although they may not feel that they do
  • Transitions between elementary school, middle school, and high school are difficult. Be sure to watch for any anxiety your kids may be experiencing
  • Have a place at home your children can study with no distractions—especially the internet
  • Monitor all internet use and social media—look into parental controls
  • Your child should be holding no more than 20% of their body weight inside their backpack. Any more than this may cause unnecessary strain. Rolling backpacks are an excellent solution; check your child’s school guidelines to see if backpacks with rollers are permissible

Find the best foods to eat that will give you energy before your work out, and curb your appetite after.

Before you work out

Smoothies are a great choice if you work out in the mornings and want to keep your breakfast light and easy. For homemade smoothies use Greek yogurt, your favorite sliced fruit, and granola.

If you are picking up a smoothie on the go make sure that it is whey or has milk-based protein with no more than 10-20 grams of protein.

Combining simple carbs with complex carbs ensures that you will have burst of energy throughout your workout. Try eating a slice of whole wheat toast with sliced bananas for a great kick of energy. You can also pair Greek yogurt and trail mix to give your body a boost with of healthy sugars.

Before work out

Oatmeal is another food that releases healthy sugar into your bloodstream during your workout. Add some fruit to your oatmeal to keep yourself extra hydrated.

Exciting things are happening for Neighbors Emergency Center, and the media is taking notice. We were recently mentioned in an article by the El Paso Times about the freestanding emergency center boom in the El Paso area. Neighbors will open an El Paso ER later this year in northeast El Paso on Edgemere Road.

Neighbors is excited to expand into El Paso and to be able discuss the importance of freestanding emergency centers in communities. Chief Medical Officer, Paul Alleyne, MD told the El Paso Times, “This will be the future of medicine, particularly ER medicine. Going to a hospital-based ER won’t be the model most people adopt going forward.”

When legislation passed in Texas in 2009 regulating freestanding emergency centers, the eight founding doctors of Neighbors recognized the need to make emergency care quicker and more accessible to patients. Neighbors Emergency Center opened ERs in the Houston Metro Area, and then rapidly expanded to the Austin area and Golden Triangle.

Neighbors is very excited to be opening freestanding emergency center in El Paso, and we are glad to be bringing quality, compassionate care to this area. By the end of 2015, Neighbors will have 19 locations total.

On Saturday, May 9, the local community came out to celebrate the grand opening of the newest Neighbors Emergency Center location in Crosby. It was a fun time with a great turnout, including Neighbors staff, local firefighters, and members of local Chambers of Commerce.

The afternoon celebration included live music, delicious food, and cocktails, including a signature drink created by Neighbors’ CEO Setul Patel. It was a lively, engaging time of networking and community gathering.

On average, a grilled cheese sandwich has 410 calories and 18 grams of fat per serving. Add butter to the equation and those numbers only rise. Here are a few tips to make that sandwich less fatty and more guilt-free:

  • Choose a cheese with more flavor! Even if you love American cheese, alternatives like Cheddar and blue cheese give you more kick. The upside? You can use less and cut fat and calories in the process.
  • Add other ingredients to the sandwich, like salsa or mashed beans. There’s a world of opportunity for your taste buds, you just have to know where to find it. Spinach and chopped onions is a delicious addition to any cheesy sandwich, too.
  • White bread gets the job done, but what about whole-grain? It’s full of fiber and has a crunchier crust when grilled.
  • Is butter really better? Try adding your favorite low-fat spread to the sandwich. This will still give you that same buttery texture without the added fat and calories.
