Healthy Eats For Thanksgiving

Let’s face reality. Thanksgiving isn’t the time for holding back, food-wise. Between the deep-fried turkeys, heaps of pumpkin pie and whipped cream, and a plethora of buttery biscuits, there’s many options come feasting time. But consider this factoid: according to the Calorie Control Council, gobblers “may consume more than 4.500 calories and a whopping 229 grams of fat” throughout the day. That’s more damage than a blitzing linebacker tackling you in the backfield.  However, there’s still hope this Turkey Day. Instead of indulging on the traditional favorites, cut some caloric corners by switching out the heavier options with these tasty alternatives.

Instead of: Green Bean Casserole

Try: Honey-Glazed Roasted Squash

This recipe combines a bounty of Fall flavors, such as mint, apple cider, and pine nuts, with the sweetness of pomegranate. The high yield and low prep time makes this option perfect for larger gatherings. Even better? All this goodness only costs you 164 calories per serving.

Instead of: Bread stuffing

Try: Bulgur Stuffing with Dried Cranberries and Hazelnuts

A common vegetarian option, bulgur—a cereal-like wheat product—is a perfect delivery vessel for flavor. A combination of cinnamon and allspice highlights this nutty swap.

Throw in some citrus and you have the best spread for those Thanksgiving leftover sandwiches. Although a bit off the beaten path, you can find bulgur in most health food stores. High in fiber and protein, this dish won’t  tip the scales at 210 calories per serving.

Instead of: Pecan Pie

Try: Apple-Pecan Upside-Down Cake

Many will agree pecan or apple pie is a Thanksgiving must-have. This recipe combines the best of both while slimming down the sugar. Pick your favorite apples and go.

Everyday Health recommends using no-calorie sugar for a further fat reduction. Whipped cream optional. This recipe packs only 176 calories and seven grams of fat per serving, roughly one-third the calories found in most pecan pies.
