The holidays are a wonderful time filled with family, food, and of course, festive fun. However, once things start winding down, we can tend to start winding back up. From sorting through the aftermath of our holiday budget, to getting ready to head back to school and work, our to-do list can begin growing. This year, ease into the New Year feeling without stress. Check out these tips on how to stay relaxed post-holidays.

Unwind after traveling

It is important that you give yourself plenty of time to unwind if you have been traveling during the holiday season. Try and give yourself a day, or night of recovery before heading back to work. This will allow you to unpack and destress. You will find that simply having time to come home and read a book, or watch a t.v. show before getting a good night’s sleep and beginning another work week very helpful.

Don’t skip your workout

Feeling sluggish from all the holiday celebrating? Skipping your morning run, or afternoon yoga class to get some extra rest may seem like the solution. However, your favorite self care activities will give you energy and recharge you. After being active your stress levels will drop. In addition, you can begin to combat those extra holiday calories enjoyed.

Don’t overextend your schedule

Right after the holidays and before the New Year may seem like a perfect time to catch up with friends, or finish those work projects that you left on hold. But, putting too much on your plate can lead to post-holiday stress. Give yourself a couple weeks of breathing room when making plans with friends and family. In addition, reevaluate and don’t be afraid to extend any work deadlines. Prioritize what is important and base your schedule around these things.

The Effects of Stress http://bestneighborsever.com/the-effects-of-stress/ Fri, 03 Apr 2015 09:02:32 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=1938 The post The Effects of Stress appeared first on .

Stress is generally perceived as something negative. It’s a concept that evokes feelings of imbalance and loss of control. However, stress is essential for navigating life. It teaches us to respond to threats and determine if things are safe or dangerous. The bad news is that an overabundance of stress can wreak havoc on our bodies, so the key is maintaining just the right balance.

What Stress Does to the Body

Stress begins a chain reaction in the body that leads to the physical symptoms we observe, and over time, the long-term effects that chronic stress can cause. The perception of a threat triggers nerve signals that transmit a message to your brain.

BNE_HealthFitness_1

This unlocks a chain reaction of chemical surges that result in the initial physical symptoms of stress: pounding heart, changes in saliva, rising blood pressure. Acute or short-term stress is good–it means your fight-or-flight response is fully engaged, preparing you to handle life’s disasters, big and small.

Chronic stress, however, means that your body is on constant high alert, causing you to have sustained elevated cortisol levels and inflammation. This can be damaging on the cellular level and with major organ systems, affecting anything from mental health to sleep to even the development of diseases.

Managing Stress

Since stress is based on many individual factors, it can be hard to prescribe a one-size-fits-all approach to its management. However, there are habits that may stave off the effects wrought by chronic stress which are practiced by calm and happy people regardless of their circumstances.

BNE_HealthFitness_2

First, the basics: they exercise regularly and get enough sleep. These two things have the potential to make a drastic impact on our lives, yet sometimes they seem the hardest habits to pick up. Try to find a way to make these things happen. It may involve letting some other things go, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Second, develop healthy mental health behaviors, including saying what you feel, whether this includes gratitude, criticism, or just offering up your honest opinion, even if it won’t be welcomed. Happy, calm people are true to themselves, and as a result, cultivate healthy friendships that help them grow as people.

Third, slow down. Take time to really savor each moment, even when you’re at your busiest. Also, step back from the hectic pace of life now and then to give yourself some time to recharge.

Finally, be true to yourself. Do the things you love to do, and never stop learning. Developing new interests and participating in new experiences will allow your mind to grow, making you into a more adaptable and accepting person who is better able to handle change.

The Amazing Benefits of Yoga http://bestneighborsever.com/the-amazing-benefits-of-yoga/ Mon, 16 Mar 2015 16:31:05 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=1780 The post The Amazing Benefits of Yoga appeared first on .

Long hailed in the Eastern world, yoga is now regarded in the West as a staple of physical fitness, something that is regularly on the schedule rotation at fitness centers. New research has opened up people’s minds about the vast benefits that come from this mental, physical, and spiritual exercise.

The Beginning

Traced back to around the fifth or sixth century BCE, yoga developed in ancient Indian ascetic circles, tied to both Hindu and Buddhist origins. Yoga gurus introduced the practice to the West, and over the past thirty years we have embraced it as a form of physical exercise, though in the East it is regarded as much more than that.

In Vedic Sanskrit, the literal meaning of the word yoga is to join, add, or unite. At its heart, yoga seeks to do this with the unification of mind, body, and spirit.

Physical & Mental Benefits

Yoga has profound physical effects on the body. The two most key elements are increased muscle strength and tone and improved respiration. Breathing is a fundamental part of yoga.

BNE_Blog_Health&Fitness-02

The breathing that is so essential to yoga creates breath awareness that strengthens the mind-body connection, which leads to improved mental functioning.

Yoga has a positive impact on the spine. Spinal disks crave movement because it provides them with the nutrients they need to stay supple. As you progress with the poses of yoga, the results will give you increased flexibility and improved posture. This leads to less injury.

Other physical benefits include maintaining a healthy metabolism, weight reduction, and cardiovascular and circulatory health.

Yoga also helps you sleep, remain calmer, and handle stress with more ease. The reasons are interconnected: all require turning off anxious natural tendencies. By being more present in the moment, we are able to soothe our minds in a manner that promotes relaxation. A calmer mind, in turn, flows into increased energy and vitality.

Surprising Perks

Yoga provides surprising extra benefits that go beyond just physical and mental health. Regular practice leads to increased immunity, engendering gene expression that boosts immunity on a genetic level.

Those who do yoga report fewer migraines, as migraines are caused by a combination of mental stressors and misalignment.

For many, the biggest change comes from the renewed outlook on life. Better breathing and posture lead to improved overall health, and feeling good again makes a world of difference.

How to Tell if You Have Adrenal Fatigue http://bestneighborsever.com/tell-adrenal-fatigue/ Mon, 19 Jan 2015 16:55:25 +0000 http://bestneighborsever.com/?p=1496 The post How to Tell if You Have Adrenal Fatigue appeared first on .

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

If you have never heard of adrenal fatigue, you may not even know you have it. Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and are in charge of producing cortisol, which helps regulate your metabolism and helps your body respond to stress. When you undergo long periods of stress without any relief, your adrenal glands can become fatigued. Chronic stress makes your adrenals not produce the hormones that you need to function normally like estrogen, progesterone, neurotransmitters, adrenaline (epinephrine), norepinephrine, and dopamine. The job of these hormones and neurotransmitters is to communicate with other organs like your brain, kidneys, and reproductive system. This can lead to adrenal fatigue or even worse, Addison’s disease.

What Stressors Cause Adrenal Fatigue?

Most of us have a decent amount of stress in our lives, but if you engage in any of these behaviors and activities on a regular basis, you are at risk for adrenal fatigue: lack of sleep, your diet consists mostly of junk and processed foods, you use stimulants like caffeine and sugar to function, you have a rigorous work schedule, you are in an unhealthy relationship or you have just endured the death of a loved one, you overtrain (training without a day of rest), or you don’t have fun or do things that make you happy.

BNE_BlogPost_Health&Fitness_01

Because we work so hard and are so stressed, we turn to coffee, energy drinks, and sugary snacks to help us get through the day. This just adds to the vicious cycle. When you are stressed, your body goes into flight-or-fight mode. Your body thinks you need an extra burst of energy so it produces more cortisol. Over time, high levels of cortisone production can cause insulin resistance and weaken your immune system.

How Do I Know if I Have Adrenal Fatigue?

There are several signs of adrenal fatigue. You may not exhibit all of these symptoms, but you may have adrenal fatigue if you have unexplained weight loss, body aches and muscle pain, severe fatigue, low blood pressure, salt and sugar cravings, lightheadedness or shakiness after skipping a meal, dizziness when you stand up, feeling tired then “wired”, sleep disturbances, low libido, infertility issues, thyroid imbalances, hair loss, blurred vision, and severe allergies.

BNE_BlogPost_Health&Fitness_02

What to Do if You Have Adrenal Fatigue

If you think you have adrenal fatigue, you can get tested. A medical professional can administer a saliva test to detect imbalances in cortisol and DHEA. You can also do things to change your life if you have adrenal fatigue. Go to bed at the same time each night and try to get eight hours of quality sleep. Avoid alcohol, sugar, dairy, and gluten. These are inflammatory foods and contribute to adrenal fatigue. Consider taking a B vitamin supplement. B vitamins are critical for the chemical process that occurs in the adrenal glands. Also, try to do something relaxing every day. Take a warm bath, a long walk, meditate, or do yoga.

BNE_BlogPost_Health&Fitness_03

Most people don’t know that they are in danger of adrenal fatigue until they are very sick. If you feel like this applies to you, try to make some of these changes and see if you start feeling better. You should always seek the advice of a medical or health professional before starting any kind of treatment.

Anyone can benefit from meditation, and as our lifestyles become more hectic and stressful, it only becomes more valuable. It’s an excellent way to calm yourself immediately, and its stress-reducing benefits will last long after your meditation session has ended. Meditation has also been shown to help people with stress-related illnesses, like anxiety and depression, high blood pressure, and sleep problems.

There’s no wrong way to meditate, so experiment a little and find a technique that works for you. One common method is to focus your attention on one thing—an image, a sensation, your breathing, anything. If your thoughts start to wander, don’t beat yourself up about it. Just slowly bring them back to what you want to focus on. The goal is to keep your usual confusing, stressful thoughts out of your head so they don’t overwhelm you. Alternatively, you can be actively mindful of all the thoughts and sensations you experience without internally commenting on or judging them. You can also practice meditation as a part of other disciplines, like yoga or tai chi.

Meditation’s established health benefits should convince you to incorporate meditation into your daily schedule now. You can do it anytime, anywhere, for as long or as short a period of time as you want. And the fact that Neighbors offers 24 hour emergency care in Houston and Austin, so that you can get the best medical care whenever you need it, will make it all the easier to relax.

“The life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress is the easiest type of existence.” ––Norman Vincent Peale

One of the most difficult challenges in life is the ability to deal with stress in a healthy way. We’ve all faced stress at some point––either at work, school, or within our relationships––and the best way to combat these feelings of discomfort and anxiety is to acknowledge the source of the stress and learn how to cope with it effectively. Managing your time, emotions, and thoughts can lead to less stress and more enjoyment.

Identify the Source

What is the cause of stress in your life? Sometimes it’s obvious––i.e., demanding work deadlines––and sometimes it’s not so apparent, such as habitual procrastination that leads to deadline stress. Get to know your habits, attitude, and excuses. When you begin accepting responsibility for the role you play in the stress in your life, you can begin changing the way you think about your stressors.

Keeping a stress journal can help you compare your thoughts and emotions over time, and show you how you can manage your stress more easily.

Manage at Your Behavior

Do you have healthy outlets to manage your stress, like moderate exercise and talking with friends? Or do you tend to have unhealthy strategies for dealing with stress, such as smoking or withdrawing socially?

Once you identify the source of your stress, you can begin to see the pattern of how you react in response.  Here are a few helpful stress management strategies:

  1. Avoid Unnecessary Stress
  • Learn your limits and learn how to say “no”
  • Avoid stressful people
  • Control your environment by turning off the TV, shopping online, and turning down the radio
  • Avoid upsetting topics of conversation
  • Drop unnecessary tasks and focus on the “must do” list only
  1. Alter the Situation
  • Express your feelings in a positive way and communicate what you need
  • Compromise with others to find a happy medium
  • Be assertive  and deal with problems head on
  • Manage your time better and stay focused
  1. Adapt to the Stressor
  • Reframe problematic situations in a more positive light. Caught in traffic? Listen to the radio and enjoy the alone time.
  • Look at the big picture. Will this moment matter in a month? A year?
  • Nothing is perfect. Don’t set your expectations unreasonably high
  • Focus on the positive!
  1. Accept Things you Can’t Change
  • Don’t try to control the uncontrollable
  • Look on the bright side
  • Share your feelings with someone trusted
  • Forgive. Forgive. Forgive.
  1. Make time for Fun and Relaxation
  • Connect with friends and family
  • Carve out time to relax
  • Do something you enjoy everyday
  • Remember to laugh and laugh often
  1. Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Cut caffeine and sugar
  • Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs
  • Get enough sleep

There’s no simple solution to cut stress entirely from your life, but there are ways to cope more effectively. If you’re concerned about the stress in your life or someone else’s health, reach out to one of our Neighbors Emergency Center locations for 24 Hour Emergency Room Care in Houston.
