While folks in other parts of the country are digging their cars out of the snow and salting the roads due to ice, Texans can now start enjoying mild, warmer weather and sunnier days.

Though the start of spring weather is enjoyable for lots of reasons, it does mean that soon the dreaded allergy season will be in full swing. There are ways, however, to reduce allergy symptoms. When it comes to avoiding allergens, being proactive is the best way to avoid reactions.

Keep The Outside Out

One of the best ways to reduce allergens in your home is to make sure you bring less of them inside with you. Pollen and other allergy-inducing annoyances can stick to shoes, clothing, skin, and hair. Taking your shoes off as soon as you enter your home can prevent tracking in many allergens. Showering and washing your hair before bed will cleanse your skin of potential allergens and keep them off your sheets and pillowcases while you sleep. It’s tempting to hang wet laundry outside during these sunny days, but drying clothing and linens inside will stop them from collecting pollen and other aggravators. And, remember, if you have pets, you’re not the only thing bringing the outside into your home. Bathing pets regularly can help remove the allergens they pick up in their coats when outside.

Air It In

If shutting out allergens is a first line of defense, keeping the air inside your home clean is the second. If you have central air conditioning and heat, set reminders to change your air return filters. Forced air conditioning can be a great ally in your home since part of its cooling technique involves lowering the humidity of the air. Lower humidity can prevent mold spores from forming, which means less allergens in your home. Sweeping and mopping floors regularly to eliminate dust mites is another great way to clear the air inside your house.

Garden Guarding

If you enjoy gardening, the warmer weather is particularly encouraging for planting and harvesting. However, if you’re an allergy sufferer, it’s important to guard against known allergens.

Try to avoid gardening during the morning, the time of day when the most amount of pollen is on the ground. Keep an eye on the local pollen count and plan your gardening for less windy days. Wearing equipment, like gloves and a dust mask, can also reduce your exposure to allergens.
